"Special" Agent Oso

Oy. Over the weekend, my daughter and I fell prey to the Disney Advertising Juggernaut (or "Dajjie, Your New Best Friend" as they call it).  We watched the heavily-promoted, yet slapped-together show, "Special Agent Oso (The Unique Stuffed Bear)".

Yikes!  And here's why:
  • He looks and feels like a latter-day Mickey Rooney.
  • The animation rouses nostalgia for Dire Straits' Money For Nothing video.
  • The constantly befuddled Oso retains information for approximately as long as a summer sidewalk retains water marks.
My 4-year-old summed up Oso's pity-inducing ineptitude thusly: "Why is he allowed to go out by himself and fly around like an adult, but he only understands things that a baby understands?"  Indeed.

When you compete with the likes of DJ Lance Rock, Candy Land, and pipe cleaner art, you'd best be bringing your A-game, flighty stuffed bear.

We're O-So over this show.

  2. Your 4 year old shouldn't be watching OSO. If she's asking the type of questions you stated, she should be on to Sesame Street and other educational shows. This show is for babies/toddlers. My 9 month old grand daughter stops whatever she's doing when the "3 Special Steps" song comes on. I love to see the excitement on her face.

  3. My three year old is hooked on Oso. i have had kids through the Barney era and Teletubbies and as an adult I can say Oso is great for my son and it teaches him great values and respect even for his age.

  4. I have to agree with the other posters here, you should steer your child towards shows which more appropriately fit her age and learning level.

My three year old daughter loves Oso. She sings every word of the theme song, and dances to the paw pilot songs. When Oso stumbles ("It's all part of the plan, more or less"), she laughs loudly and enjoys helping him find his way.
